Kehinde Wiley “The World Stage: Jamaica” Exhibition @ Stephen Friedman Gallery

New York-based contemporary painter Kehinde Wiley brings his strong style of portraiture overseas, presenting for the first time on U.K. soil at Stephen Friedman Gallery. His “The World Stage: Jamaica”exhibition features new paintings in his Neo-Renaissance approach, this time considering everyday Jamaican men and women. Borrowing poses from 17th and 18th century British portraiture, Wiley infuses a necessarily Jamaican swatch of hues within the collection, again visiting the conversation between ‘master’ and ‘subject’, and purposefully confusing popular notions of heroism. Further, the exhibition will include a video summary of Wiley’s findings during observances in both London and Jamaica. “The World Stage: Jamaica” will be on display until November 16 at Stephen Friedman Gallery in London.
